about

the occulted boy, a new album by caregiver/caretaker has one physical cassette copy and it was buried somewhere in Omaha. (It has been found. It has a different tracklisting and a live track 'corn knife' only available on the cassette)

Willa Cather was born in 1873 in Gore, VA. The Cathers moved to Nebraska in hopes to avoid tuberculosis outbreaks. They settled on Red Cloud. Willa trained as a surgeon but found writing more amenable. Willa wrote and published extensively between 1896 and 1918 when her third novel 'My Ántonia' was released, in which the childhood point of view on the prairie was transposed from Willa to the antagonist Jim. It told the story of Bohemian immigrants rough times on the Nebraska plains.

Read Melissa Homestead's biography on Willa Cather and her debated sexuality in 'The Only Wonderful Things: The Creative Partnership of Willa Cather and Edith Lewis,'

Day 1 clue
the dust never settled, it hung like a cloud
native prairie obscured by the crimson shroud

meditate on these here clues in hopes they center you
east as the crow flies from north O, south O, middle too
but when in Deep Thought don't let the answer fool you

Day 2 clue
seek the occulted boy amongst the ambient waves of grey
in the house of Hermes where Mercury and Hecate make hay

Day 3 clue
Rich and sombre and always silent
don't give up now you have survived Lent
silence here the noise of the thresher
take this moment as a refresher

Day 4 clue
act with haste whether zoomer, millennial or extraterrestrial
just don't wait another sesquicentennial

Day 5 final clue
30 paces up against the wall
in the prairie so small
you will unbury a prize
to keep for yourself or share with all

sounds include field recordings near creeks, in prairie grass, and a barn, audiobook samples. instruments used: acoustic guitar, contact mic shovel, 120 year old scythe, boss distortion, live overdub, aiwa v-sensor cassette loop
